Quotes from the Holy Fathers

Ignatius of Antioch lived in the period just after the Apostles, and was most probably their direct disciple. He became Bishop in Antioch in 69 A.D.   We have 7 extant letters that he wrote to the various communities on his way to Rome where he was martyred by being fed to the lions in 107 A.D.  Below are some quotes from his epistles to the church at Ephesus and to the Church at Rome.

1. “For we can have no life apart from Jesus Christ”

 2. “Do not have Jesus Christ on your lips, and the world in your hearts.”

3. “Regarding the rest of mankind, you should pray for them unceasingly, for we can always hope that repentance may enable them to find their way to God.”

 4. “I would rather die for Christ than rule the whole earth.”
